The Inhabitants
The history of Bayombong is of family interest since they were apparently among the founding fathers. One of our early ancesters, Franciso Balunsat, was Elected Alcalde Natural 1782-1787

The Gaddanes and from Daruyat, Angadanan, Isabela and amanga, Cagayan and the Malaates also of Isabela followed by intrepid Ifugaos from the neighboring mountain province in about 1718 and settled in bayombong.
The Malaates settled at Paltan while the Gaddanes established their communities at the Calepquep Hill (what is now a part of Vista Alegre Hill). However, the Gaddanes were fierce, more concentrated and who frowned on the influx of other ethnic groups. Thus, having been driven away, the Ifugaos Tribes retreated back to their original abode and are now settlers of today’s Ifugao Province.
The Gaddangs of Bayombong were led by able leaders Ramon Cabauatan, Jacinto Gadingan, Vicente Saquing, Ignacio Abuag, Mariano Danao, Domingo Bayaua and certain Bincatan and Mamuric.  They wore their flowing tresses long. They were fierce fighters and they did not bow to the invaders. The men used “balagues” or G-strings and the women “ampuyot” or aprons.

Birth of Bayombong

On April 12, 1739 at a temporary makeshift chapel at the foot of the majestic bold and plateau Bangan Hill, Father Pedro Freire celebrated the first mass. This date consigned by history marked the formal official birth of the town of Bayombong.

The origin of the name Bayombong

The town”Bayumbung” was established at the southeastern part of the present La Torre were the Bayumbung river passed throught. The name Bayombong came from the Gaddang wars “bayongbong” wich means confluenc of a mighty river.
Legend handed down through the rears has another version of the origin on the town’s name. The Gaddanes never welcomed the arrival of the Malaates. The resistance triggered the first tribal war resulting in the Malaates retreat to the nearby areas. In the retreat, thy left their prized valuable posesesssion, the “bayongbong”, a bamboo about two meters long used by the Malaates to carry fresh waters from well built along the river banks. The places were literally littered with so many abandoned bayongbong and since then the place was named “Bayumbung” as a fitting reminder to the Gaddanes of their first taste of victory resisting invasion to their private domain.
It was delightful for th Spanish missionaries to see the natives parading in long queues with their “Bayongbong” filled with water on their shoulders. Asked by the friars about the bamboo water conainers, the carriers chorused “banongbong” in response. For convenience and for lack of fitting name, the Spanich Friars baptized the place “Bayumbumg” and later changed in to “Bayombong” to mellow the harsh, unpleasant and provincially-hard sound of the word “Bayumung”.
